Turre is ostensibly a small village, which is growing rapidly. Situated to the north of the Sierra Cabrera on the river Aguas. In the eastern part of the province of Almería is only 45 minutes drive from the Almeria capital and its international airport (45 minutes) by the excellent E15 motorway, and only 5 minutes away from Vera, Mojacar and Garrucha beaches.
Visitors can explore the fascinating history. Descendants from the Mozarabic, the local Turreros are rightly proud of their heritage. The Christian conquest at the end of the 15th century shaped what is Turre today. Forced to convert to Christianity, those that didn’t convert were forced into slavery after an attempted escape to Africa in 1502. ‘Asked’ to return to Africa, those that couldn't were forced to stay in Mudejar Arab quarter.
The Turreros have invested their time in the preservation of such buildings as the Parish Church de la Purísima Concepción, constructed between 1861 and 1887 and other significant monuments like the 16th century Chapel of St Francis of Assisi and some Archaeological remains.
With its one main street and the usual meandering side streets is what you expect in small Spanish villages, with many shops, restaurants and Internet cafes. For such a small town Turre has a surprising range of restaurants, from traditional Spanish, Argentinian Steak houses and Chinese to Indian and Italian Pizza Houses. There is a wide and varied nightlife in the main Street which runs the length of the town. Although the side streets and residential areas tend to be vary quiet, making Turre an excellent location for all types of families, for couples with young children and the retired the quiet sleepy back streets are an ideal retreat and for the teens and those looking for a more exciting lifestyle the local bars provide varied entertainment often with live music.
