In order to defend the coasts from Christian attack, and later from the Berber pirates, the coast of Almeria was protected with an extensive network of forts and watch towers. The Castillo de Santa Ana in the port area of Roquetas de Mar has been recently restored. It is now an important location for cultural events and exhibitions.
Roquetas de Mar is the fastest growing city in Almeria Province, with the greatest number of registered businesses. With a population of over 60,000 (in 2003 - expected to rise to 170,000 by 2010), coupled with close proximity to Almeria International Airport, the town has become an important Mediterranean business and financial centre, attracting businesses from every sector and nationality. The two major commercial activities remain agriculture (the town is surrounded by plastic greehouses) and tourism.
Roquetas prides itself on its Blue Flag beaches, popular with many thousands of tourists: it is Almería's best known resort destination, specially for internal Spanish tourism. Near the beaches there are 2 nice golf resorts: Playa Serena and La Envia Golf, and an excellent resort with Marina at Almerimar.
