The second-largest town in Almería province, Huércal Overa sits between two branches of the Rio Almanzora and owes its existence to the union of two medieval settlements, Huércal and Overa. Like so many towns of the region, past prosperity came from the lead mines of the area. It is now principally a centre for the abundant surrounding farming industry: Monday is market-day and fresh produce abounds!

The area is also home to a reforestation project that has grown the first forest there for over 500 years - the beginning of a long-term project to transform much of the area into lush greenery. The trees include palm, almonds, oak and eucalyptus.

There are numerous historic buildings of interest: the Parish Church de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (1505); the Parish Church de la Asunción de la Virgen (1748); the Chapel of Jesús Nazareno (1749); a bell tower dating from the Middle Ages, looming over the town; the old Pósito (Granary) and the Via Crucis which leads to the Hermitage del Calvario. There's also an Arabic castillo dating back to the 18th century.

The town has excellent facilities with a variety of hotels, restaurants, the modern area hospital, a municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. A performing arts centre is currently under construction. The A7/E15 motorway, which is the main north-south Mediterranean artery, runs close by. All these modern services and amenities have an enormous attraction on the growing foreign population looking for the excellent prices of villas and appartments, due to the short distance to the beaches.
