Granada, historic province of southern Spain, in Andalucía Region, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It was captured by the Moors in 711 and was dominated by them until 1492. In the 13th century Granada became an independent Moorish kingdom, later obliged to pay tribute to the Christian king of Castile. In 1492, when the vassal king of Granada refused to render the usual tribute, Ferdinand V and Isabella I, conquered the kingdom, making it one of the 13 provinces of 15th-century Spain. In 1833, old Granada was divided into the present-day provinces of Granada, Almería, and Málaga. Now days Granada City is also the Capital of the Province of the same name and is part of Andalusia autonomous community in southern Spain.
Granada province is characterised by extreme variables in landscape and climate, so much so that it's possible to ski in the mountains and go diving in the sea the same day. Physical features include the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountain range, a hot Mediterranean coastal plain (Costa Tropical), and a fertile elevated inland plain, the ‘Huerta de Granada’.
The economy is predominantly agricultural, with cereals, sugarcane, and tobacco widely grown. Other products include olives, oranges, lemons, figs, almonds, and pomegranates. Principal industries are also agriculture-based, although there is some manufacturing in Granada city. Mining is important - Sierra de Gador was the richest source of lead in the world during the 19th century, the Marquesado de Zenete region is one of Spain's largest producers of iron ore. Tourism is a significant source of income for the area. The Sierra Nevada mountains are home to the fertile Las Alpujarras region, and Mulhacén, which at a height of 3,478 mt is the highest peak on the Iberian peninsula.
