Situated in the foothills of the Filabres Mountains, approx. 15 km inland from Mojacar and Garrucha, Bedar has been in existence since the rule of the Moors. The well-irrigated, stepped fields and narrow, winding streets are indeed a reminder of the area's Muslim past. The village's mosque was converted to an olive mill and subsequently became a private residence.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a mining centre, producing lead ore which was taken first by an aerial transport system and then by underground steam railway to the port at Garrucha. There are many remains of the mining industry in both Bedar and Garrucha - the railway head and processing complex can still be seen near Marina de la Torre.
Bedar is now a beautiful traditional community with all the character, good restaurants, small shops, a post office, pharmacy, doctor's surgery and the inevitable 'local' bars. Being around 400 metres above sea level, the village enjoys relief from the summer heat with some cooling breezes where many of the best villas and cortijos for holiday or permanent residence are located, enjoying the best views of the plains of Vera and the sea.
